The Kingdom of Egypt was established in 1922 and lasted until 1953. From 1867-1914, Egypt was a Khedivate, a tributary state of the Ottoman Empire, but under British occupation since 1822. In November 1914, the British removed Khedive Abbas II from power, due to his siding with the Ottoman Empire and the Central Powers during World War I. He was replaced by his uncle, Hussein Kamel. The following month, Egypt became a Sultanate, as a protectorate of the United Kingdom.
Egypt gained its independence from the UK in February 1922, becoming a sovereign state. The reigning Sultan, Fuad I, declared himself King in March 1922.
