Bhutan is a landlocked country in South Asia bordered by China and India. For centuries, Bhutan was ruled by Buddhist spiritual leaders and was comprised of many fiefdoms governed by local lords. In 1907, the House of Wangchuck overpowered the local lords and united the country. In 2008, Bhutan adopted its first modern Constitution and transitioned from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy.
