Brunei, officially Nation of Brunei, Abode of Peace, is located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in the South China Sea. Brunei shares the island of Borneo with parts of Malaysia and Indonesia. It is an Islamic absolute monarchy. The House of Bolkiah has ruled since 1363 although Brunei was a British protectorate from 1888 – 1984. The Sultan of Brunei is the absolute monarch, the head of state, and also the head of government in his capacity as Prime Minister.
