The House of Normandy ruled England from 1066 when William, Duke of Normandy invaded England and defeated the last king of the House of Wessex, Harold II Godwinson, at the Battle of Hastings. Their reign came to an end in 1154 when the English crown passed to Henry II and the House of Angevin under the Treaty of Winchester, bringing an end to nineteen years of a civil war called The Anarchy fought between Henry II’s mother Empress Matilda, the only surviving child of King Henry I, and her cousin King Stephen over the possession of the English crown.
