The House of Stuart had been the reigning house in Scotland since 1371. With the extinction of the House of Tudor in 1603 upon the death of Queen Elizabeth I, King James VI of Scotland, the only child of Mary, Queen of Scots, succeeded to the throne of England as James I, King of England.

King Henry VII → Margaret Tudor married James IV King of Scots (first husband) → James V, King of Scots → Mary, Queen of Scots → James VI, King of Scots

James VI also had a line of succession through his father.

King Henry VII → Margaret Tudor married Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus (second husband) → Lady Margaret Douglas → Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley married Mary, Queen of Scots → James VI, King of Scots

The House of Stuart lasted only 111 years.  The last Stuarts failed to provide Protestant heirs and Parliament passed the 1701 Act of Settlement giving the crown to Sophia of the Palatinate, Electress Hanover, a granddaughter of King James I, and her Protestant heirs.
