What are the current laws of succession?

Have women always been able to rule in Luxembourg?
No, not at all. Under the Nassau Pact, which dealt with the establishment of Luxembourg as a Grand Duchy, and the personal union with the Netherlands, the throne of Luxembourg could only pass to males. This brought about the end of the union with the Netherland when King Willem III died in 1890 leaving just a daughter. As she could not inherit the Luxembourg throne, it passed to a distant relative, Adolphe, Duke of Nassau. Several generations later, the situation arose again. Grand Duke Willem IV had six daughters and no sons. He had the House law changed to allow his eldest daughter to succeed him, and her sisters in the event she had no male heirs. This allowed Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaide and her sister Grand Duchess Charlotte to reign. It wasn’t until 2011 that the House Law was changed to allow for absolute primogeniture. This change takes effect with the descendants of Grand Duke Henri.

What is the Grand Ducal Family’s last name?
As with other countries, most members of the Grand Ducal family don’t actually have surnames. In the few instances where one has been needed, it has been ‘de Nassau’. The most recent example is the marriage of Prince Louis, 3rd son of Grand Duke Henri. Louis and his wife had already given birth to their first child. He gave up his rights to succession but retained his title of Prince of Luxembourg. His wife, however, did not take on his royal style or title. She, and their son, were given the surname ‘de Nassau’. (This has since been changed when she was elevated to Princess of Luxembourg, and the couple’s two sons were created Princes of Nassau.) Officially, Luxembourg is ruled by the House of Luxembourg-Nassau.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was initially ruled in union with the Netherlands, by the House of Orange-Nassau. In 1890, the union ended and the throne passed to the House of Nassau-Weilburg. Although Grand Duchess Charlotte married Felix of Bourbon-Parma, her heirs continued to reign as the House of Nassau-Weilburg, while also personally belonging to the House of Bourbon-Parma.

How long has there been a monarchy in Belgium?
Luxembourg was elevated to a Grand Duchy in 1815. Initially ruled in personal union with the Netherlands, the two countries split in 1890 upon the death of King Willem III. While Willem’s daughter went on to be Queen of the Netherlands, the laws of Luxembourg did not allow women on the throne. Therefore, the throne of Luxembourg passed to a very distant relative of the late King Willem III – Adolphe, Duke of Nassau (actually former Duke, as Nassau had been annexed by Prussia some years earlier). Adolphe is a direct descendant of the current Grand Duke.
