Morocco is in northern Africa. It borders Algeria, the disputed territory of Western Sahara, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea. The first Moroccan state was established in 789. The House of Alaouite began its rule in Morocco in 1666 and continues to this day. Morocco was a French Protectorate from 1912 until 1956 when Morocco became independent. In 1957, Morocco became a kingdom and Sultan Muhammad V became the first King of Morocco.
