Qatar is in western Asia, on the Qatar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It is surrounded by the Gulf of Bahrain and the Persian with Saudi Arabia being its only land border. Qatar was a British Protectorate and gained its independence in 1971. Originally tribal leaders, the House of Al Thani has officially ruled in Qatar since 1847. In 1868, the House of Al Thani signed a treaty with the British that recognized its separate status. The order of succession is determined by appointments within the Al Thani family and there is no official heir to the throne.
